Hi there
Sue, my better half, works as a personal assistant to one of the senior professors at Loughborough University.
One of her special projects of late has been to set up a special relationship with the University of Malay as a result of which 8 engineering students are on a years placement with a major Malayan engineering company.
One of these students, a young lady has sent an article which has been published on the University website.
In it she has spoken of her first 4 months working in Malaya.
Despite the difficulties of very long tiresome hours and having to work 6 days a week in the extreme humidity which she is not used to she is full of enthusiasm.
As she says she is not just learning about how industry works and the technical side of the business she is also learning about new cultures, different people but perhaps most of all about herself.
She says "we are taking a little trip of self-discovery that no tutor, no exam, no text book and no library reference section could ever really teach you"
What a marvelous attitude.
I hope that in the future far more young people will have the opportunity to travel to a different country to continue their education. It is the best hope for the world's future.
Thought for today: Do you try to understand other peoples beliefs and cultures?
Joke for today:- Did you here about the overweight ballerina? She had to wear a three-three.
On this day 15th November
In 1918 the day was declared Victory Day in Britain. At 11am the all clear was sounded for the last time accompanied with bugles and sirens.
In 1837 Isaa Pitman a 24 year old schoolteacher from Wiltshire in England published a book about shorthand writing.
In 1864 Sherman burns Atlanta.

Exciting or what? Well it is for me!
Hi there
Found out something exciting this week. Well exciting for me although probably boring for you!
Actually it was Sue who found out this information as she is the one who is more involved in family history than me.
What she found out was that my great great gggggrandfather was a famous British judge and politician back in the early 18th century.
His name was Sir John Pratt (note the "Sir") A member of the aristocracy no less!
He was a Member of Parliament then went on to be Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1721 and was also Lord Chief Justice of England from 1718 to 1725.
One of his sons (the younger brother of my direct ancestor) was created Earl Camden in 1786 and was a personal friend of William Pitt the famous Prime Minister.
He was heavily involved in the discussions regarding taxing the colonies and in fact I believe he was against it. If he had got his way the American War of Independence may not have occurred.
Anyrate its strange how finding out such information affected me. For some reason it has given me much more confidence to build my internet business. Strange really.
Obviously the family went downhill from then onwards!!
Thought for today. Do you appreciate what your ancestors have done for you?
Joke for today:- When flying try to keep the number of landings equal to the number of take-offs.
On this day:- August 7th
In 1957 Oliver Hardy died.
In 1926 the first British Gran Prix motor race was held. The average speed of the winning car was 71.61 mph (115.24 kph)
Cheers

He also formed Camden Town a well known area of London.

It was brought home to me
Hi there
Sue, my better half, is the personal assistant to one of the professors at Loughborough University (actually to more than one professor but that's another story).
Last week one of the students who had just obtained his advanced degree arranged for his parents to visit the university before he returned home.
This young gentleman happens to be a Palestinian and has been studying here for a number of years.
Sue had helped him on several occasions and as a thank you was taken to lunch by him and his parents.
During the lunch the conversation turned to what impressions the parents received on visiting England.
The overriding impression was our freedom.
They couldn't get over the fact that they saw in the town centre people of all different religions, colour and ethnic background going about their business.
They were mingling together in the market with no apparent animousity to one another.
Bear in mind that Loughborough is only a medium sized town and it is true that you see burkas, saris, turbans, orthodox Jewish dress etc all the time.
This statement by the parents when relayed to me pulled me up short.
I just take seeing all this different people walking around without any apparent fear as normal.
There is the occasional ill feeling I suppose but relatively minor compared with other areas of the world
In Palestine this highly intelligent and qualified young man has to pass through 3 check points on the way to and from work including strip searches every day!
No I'm not pointing the finger at either the Israelies or the Arabs as they both have a valid point of view and I'm sure that there is good and bad on both sides.
I am just pointing out what a joy it is to live in a country where we take freedom for granted.
Isn't maintaining this situation something really worth protecting
Long may it continue.
Thought for today:- Do you appreciate the freedoms you have in your life?
Joke for today:- Does killing time damage eternity?
On this day:- 1st August
In 1833 Britain passed an act of Parliament freeing all slaves in the nations territories after a 5 to 7 year apprenticeship. £20 million pounds ($ 37 million) was earmakrked as compensation for the slave owners.
In 1774 Sir Joseph Priestley announced that he had discovered oxygen
In 1798 Nelson destroyed the French fleet thus cutting off Napoleon's supply route to his army in Egypt.
